Case Study: Canal Club Monthly Residency

April 11, 2026 — — 2 min read

When we launched our monthly residency at the Canal Club in January 2026, we knew we wanted to create something special. Not just another club night, but a recurring experience that would set a new standard for sound quality in Richmond.

The Challenge

The Canal Club is a 500-capacity venue with a mix of hard surfaces and a relatively low ceiling. These acoustics can create harsh reflections and muddy bass if the system is not dialed in correctly. Previous events had used standard rental PA systems that struggled with the room.

Our Approach

We deployed a Funktion One Evo 7T system with dual F124 subs, specifically tuned for the room. The first session involved three hours of measurement and EQ work before doors opened. We placed the tops on custom-height stands to optimize throw angle for the room depth, and positioned the subs in a cardioid configuration to minimize stage bleed.

The Lighting Design

For lighting, we brought in eight Chauvet Intimidator moving heads and a Kvant laser system. The rig was designed to be modular so each month features a different visual theme while maintaining setup efficiency. Load-in takes under four hours with our three-person crew.

Results

Attendance grew 40 percent from month one to month six. The venue reported their highest bar revenue on Frequencies nights, and we have received consistent feedback that the sound quality is unlike anything else in Richmond. Three touring DJs have specifically requested to play the residency after hearing about the system.

Key Takeaways

Consistency is everything in a residency. Same crew, same standards, same attention to detail every month. The audience learns to trust that the experience will be exceptional, and that trust builds a loyal community.
